Kent Channel Dawn I have been painting the sands of Morecambe Bay for several years, the inter-tidal sands and mud flats stretch out for miles from the shore and are both beautiful and treacherous. The tide comes in faster than an adult can run and there are many areas of quicksand. In Cartmel Priory on the Northern side of the Bay 141 burials of people who have drowned crossing the Bay are recorded. As a public fishery many people come to pick the Morecambe Bay Cockles. The estimated value of the cockles in the Bay is £6 million. In February 2004 18 Chinese immigrants were drowned after being stranded by fast-rising tides. The lorry that had taken them far out onto the sands broke down sealing their fate as darkness descended and the tide came in. Medium: Oil on Paper Image Size: 73.5x104cm. Framed Size 122x144cm.
